It's hard to believe it, but summer is already in full swing.
And if your kids are anything like mine, it doesn’t take long until that dreadful complaining starts…
And we hear those dreadful words…
(You know the ones I’m talking about)
It’s enough to make even the most well-rested and caffeinated mom lose her mind.
The next time your child starts to complain, try one of these 5 different ideas for activities that will make summer boredom disappear!
Give each of your kids a camera (or a phone/tablet with a camera) and go for a walk at the park or your neighborhood. Make a list before hand of about 20 things you might see on your walk. As your kids walk and take pictures of things, have them check off on their list things that they have pictures of. They can compete for a prize and make it a contest. This is a great outdoor activity and your kids might even discover a passion for photography.
This is a classic choice that can be a ton of fun. Go to your local craft store or super market and grab a tie-dye kit (or check online how to make your own colors) Once you have everything set up, get ready for a good time! There are many tutorials online for different designs and swirls that you can achieve on a shirt. Get your kids to choose colors and designs. Don’t be surprised if they wear it 3 days in a row…
This requires a little bit of setup. Make a map that has the location of a hidden treasure somewhere around (inside or outside) your home. Cut the map into different parts. Hide each part of the map somewhere and write on the back of each one a clue leading to the next piece. Once they find all of the pieces of the map, they can then find the treasure. The prize can be whatever you want it to be. It’s a great way to get kids outside and active!
This can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. Try watching a movie outside at night with blankets and pillows. You can either all gather around a laptop or use a projector. You can try projecting onto a wall outside or a bedsheet that is hanging from something. This is a fun way of making a movie night more memorable. Add some homemade popcorn and the night will be perfect!
This is essentially the same as a water balloon fight, but with sponges. Have a few buckets of water in place with sponges in each. You can coordinate sponge colors for each child, or even grab a massive car washing sponge the next time you’re at the store. Make sure you keep your distance unless you want to participate. Because it will definitely get wet and wild. The sponges are still soft so they don’t hurt, and you can keep using them unlike balloons. Keep dunking the sponges to fill them over and over again. This will likely become a favorite activity that can be done again and again all summer long.
